Should clients normalize punctuation before rendering notes?

I'm testing a parser against the v1.0 guide. When a line contains both a code token and a comma, our caption export splits it into two cues. Here is the test client: FacelessVideos. Should punctuation be normalized before the API call, or should the renderer keep the source string unchanged?
